Asheville NC, The Paris of the South

We saw excess …

where gargoyles stood guard.

Reflections at Biltmore …

where we spied a greenhouse …

and entered through an ancient door…

where we were surrounded by nature…

and a perfectly framed view.

We spied a living rooftop…

and a quilt of many colors.

Was it worth the 12 hour journey?

Definitely y’all.

  1. I love Asheville–it’s my favorite day trip—well worth the five hour round-trip drive. Fun antique and consignment shops, Biltmore is FABULOUS, and the village is so much fun. DL and I are looking for a second home (fixer-upper) in the mountains, just in case our inheritance is large. Glad you loved our beautimous state!

  2. I used to live in Asheville and I love it…Biltmore is such a beautiful place and you must come back during the Christmas season to see it all decorated. I would love to see what you think of it then. 🙂

  3. Oh, I am so glad you loved Asheville and our beautiful state. We go to the mountains several times a year, and we generally go to Biltmore every other Christmas. Last year we did the Candlelight tour and it was so memorable. You def need to make the trek back for that one. It is just amazing that they were able to accomplish what they did back then. This post makes me want to pack up the van and head out to Asheville. 🙂

  4. Your pictures are amazing. Seriously. That one with the view of the estate in the background look like a magazine. Do you think I could quilt a garden in Kentucky?

  5. We were “year round pass holders”…we love it that much….I have no problems in asking hubby to take me there over and over, as he loves the architecture…no matter how many times you go..you always see something you never noticed before…such a place of sheer grandeur and elegance….Love going there at Christmas time and then hopping over to the Grove Park Inn to see the annual National Gingerbread House competition…incredible…Glad you had a great time there!!!…

  6. It looks amazing! I’d never even heard of this place before, so pretty! If I ever go to NC, I’d definitely like to go there =) Thanks for sharing

  7. Hi Kelly! OH, I’ve never been to Asheville and going to the Biltmore is on my bucket list! How beautiful. I have seen TV specials on it and it just wets my whistle. Thank you so much for popping in to see me.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

  8. How fun! I’ve only been through Asheville on the way to Hilton Head, but I’d love to spend some time there. Might have to be a girl’s trip. I don’t think my family of boys would appreciate the Biltmore as much as me 🙂

  9. Oh my, Kelly–I’ve never been to Ashville, but I certainly would love to visit sometime. In the meantime, I have your wonderful post and photos to take me there–what an amazing shot of the reflection of Biltmore in the lake–gorgeous!

    1. Only before the IRS was that edifice possible but I am glad the family still holds onto it. Being not far from it and having a mom from N.C. I have been several times but they keep opening new parts every time I visit. I never tire of the gardens. I have never been at Christmas and that should be added to my wish list and yours. hugs, olive

  10. We live in Pa. but have been to Ashville and Biltmore several times. Both are magnificent! In the Spring it is amazingly beautiful. Thanks for the awesome pictures and reminder to GO BACK! XO, Pinky

  11. Asheville…we go as often as possible. You were here in my territory! So glad you had fun. Did you make it to the Antique Tobacco Barn right around the corner from Biltmore? A vintage and junkers heaven!

  12. I don’t think I’ve ever been here, just in the vicinity traveling through a time or two. The greenhouse door, the perfectly framed view, the little building with the living roof, your images capture enough of its magical qualities that I want to be there. Nice work!

  13. Great post with great pictures! I’m so glad that you have inspired others to visit the Biltmore House. I have lived less than 2 hours from Biltmore all of my life and did not go there until I was in college. I could not believe that my parents took me so many other places and never took me there! It is truly a national treasure and well worth the trip. I have been many times now and still enjoy every visit!

  14. My husband and I visited Asheville and the Biltmore Estates many years ago. To this day, it remains one of my favorite trips. Love your gorgeous photos.

  15. I can’t believe that I lived in Asheville for five years, but didn’t make it to Biltmore until I moved away! It is a swoon worthy place, that’s for sure. Can you imagine what it must have been like to live there??? I second the advice of several others – if at all possible, you really need to see it at Christmas. Unbelievable!

  16. Biltmore is gorgeous and I’ve been there, but it was at Christmas for the candlelight tour and we didn’t get to see the gardens. Thanks for sharing..great photos! Love the one of the open door to the greenhouse.

  17. Love your post – beautiful photos!!! Thanks for sharing –
I live in Montreal – which is unofficially known as the Paris of North America – so really enjoyed seeing your version!!!

  18. This place has been on my list for a long time. My father grew up in a little teeny town about an hour from here. Would love to see this all again. Beautiful pics.

  19. Saw this post on Kim’s Savvy Southern Style. I live in Asheville and I am so glad you enjoyed your time in the Paris of The South. I love it here. We are passholders at the Biltmore and going all of the time. I was just at the arboretum a few weeks back and posted the same picture of the moss roofed garden shed.
