Communing with Nature – in New Jersey?!

I’m sure you’ve heard all the stereotypes about New Jersey.

I mean, we’ve got Snooki so I understand completely!

But there’s another side to Jersey …

Within 1/2 hour, I can ski, be in the thick of things in NYC, collect shells on a beautiful beach or commune with nature.

Which is just what I did this weekend.

  1. Beautiful scenery and great photography, Kelly. I’ve always heard that NJ is a very beautiful state. You’re fortunate to live close to some many different areas. I don’t want to live in NY, but I would love to be close enough to take advantage of some of the shopping there.

  2. Kelly,

Good for you for letting people know how beautiful the “Garden State” is! I am a New Yorker, and I am constantly amazed at the level of ignorance people have about NY and NJ. They think all New Yorkers live in Manhattan and have been mugged multiple times, and all New Jersey residents are like Snookie or The Real Housewives! Both states have incredible nature beauty, fantastic beaches and lots of culture. I wish more people were aware of this and I love your beautiful photos showing how pretty it is!

  3. How lovely, Kelly! 20+ years ago I went to a friend’s wedding in a little stone Episcopal church in rural NJ and I was astonished by how beautiful the countryside is! Looks like a weekend of the BEST sort to me… 🙂

  4. Gorgeous Kelly! I’ve heard the same thing Suzy has… NJ is a beautiful state that gets a bad rap from time to time. It sounds like you get the best of both worlds – city when you want it and country when you don’t. Your pics are beautiful!

  5. Thanks for showing us the ‘Real’ side of Jersey Kelly!! I knew it wasn’t all about big hair and bold lipstick!!! 😉 That farm is so pretty!!

  6. Oh Kelly…I am so jealous that your leaves are so beautiful now…love that pic with the girls and hubby….fantastic…Yes, you are so fortunate to be close to everything…not many people can say that….glad you had a wonderful day in the country!!!…

  7. As a fellow “Jersey Girl”, I appreciate this post immensely! Seeing the oil refineries while landing at Newark Airport, is not a good first impression of our beautiful state. I live in a beautiful community which I have lived in my entire life. While the property taxes are tough, I love NJ!

  8. Such beautiful pictures! I communed with nature too…while looking out my windows as I sat on the couch with the flu. BOO!!!!!

I’ll live vicariously through you for a few moments if you don’t mind.

  9. What a beautiful afternoon! That is the scenery my heart longs for and I dream of one day moving to with my family. I knew there was more to NJ than the Jersey Shore…

  10. Hello Kelly!
I just found a new thrift store in Union City, New Jersey.
It is in a church called St. John’s at 1516 Palisade Avenue.
    Great Stufff

  11. I was in New Jersey for the first time last year and it was lovely. At least the part I was in. Not like the stereotypes at all. I appreciate that because, being from Kansas, I know all about stereotypes. 🙂

  12. I’m a Jersey girl too, Jersey Shore to be specific–just so you know, not the people from the “jersey shore” those Jersey Shore people are not from the Jersey Shore they are what we call Bennies or “Down for the Weekenders” and dont reflect the Jersey Shore people at all Your are right, beaches, mountains, acres and acres of farmland, historical sites, close (not too close) to NYC and Philadelphia–we have just about EVERYTHING you could want here, farms, campgrounds, malls, miles and miles of beautiful open land, mountains with gorgeous lakes, Atlantic City, the Poconos you name it we got it. What town are you from?

  13. I have to echo Suzy’s comments about the photography and scenery. Beautiful.

On my one and only trip to NJ, I did some exploring in Lambertville and was struck by how pretty the little town was. It wasn’t the Jersey I was expecting based on movies, books, stereotypes, etc.

But as someone from the South, I know how wrong stereotypes of places can be.

Thanks for sharing the real NJ with the rest of us.

  14. I lived in NJ until I was 11 and became a California girl. I’m always telling people how beautiful much of the state is. I have wonderful memories of walking in parks with my family in the fall and spring, summer visits to the beach, train rides to Manhattan to visit museums, and walking and riding my bike everywhere in our town. Great and happy memories.

  15. Thanks so much for posting those beautiful photos. I’m a Jersey girl, born and bred, recently moved to Rhode Island due to my husband’s job transfer. I’d give anything to be back in the Garden State, I miss it so! When we first moved here, I spent a great deal of my time defending New Jersey. Now when people make snide remarks about my home, I tell them the truth — that they don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s a wonderful place to live, to work, to raise a family, and fortunately, that’s exactly what we did. Hopefully, we will return one day.

  16. Hey Kelly, I didn’t know you were a Jersey girl too?! I grew up in South Jersey and miss home dearly. One of the things I miss most is being so conveniently located to everything, like you mentioned. I miss the shore and weekend trips to NYC. I crave Wawa hoagies and soft pretzels all the time. Hopefully I’ll get to make it home for Christmas. Thanks for the memories…

  17. I loved seeing your beautiful pictures. I started to read the comments. Being a Jersey Girl does make me smile. Even though I grew up with my father calling me Snookie I am not that Jersey Girl. lol
Your so right Kelly NJ has so much to offer. The only downside is the taxes and car insurance.

  18. What a lovely place in the country you got to visit, Kelly. I grew up on a farm, and although I live in town and enjoy it, there are times when I miss all the animals. We have cats, and our neighbors have chickens, so that helps! Your photos were beautiful.

  19. Thank you Kelly for showing how beautiful New Jersey is. I was born and raised in the Pocono area of Pennsylvania (a beautiful place) but moved to New Jersey 28 years ago when I got married and have never felt sorry I did. We have lived in Ocean County in the same house for 25 years in a lovely shore community. My husband is from Harrison.
    Thanks again,
    Kelly
