Who could forget that scene from Christmas Vacation?

When Chevy Chase dramatically carved into that turkey … only to see it deflate before his very eyes.

Young and old broke bread around that table.

But what if your table can’t hold everyone?

We’ve all paid our dues there, cast away from the adults to the dreaded kids table.

So how to make that kids table the place to be?

How to Make a Paper Bag Turkey

Supplies: large brown grocery bag, 2 small brown lunch bags, hot glue gun, scissors, sheet of white paper, popcorn

1. Frill – cut a piece of printer paper in half lengthwise. Fold the paper in half lengthwise and make small cuts with a pair of scissors on the folded half.

2. Drumsticks – stick your fist inside lunch bag then use your other hand to mould the bag into a rounded (drumstick like) shape. Fill the bag 2/3 of the way with popcorn. Twist the bottom of the bag to keep it tight. Hot glue one edge of the white frilly paper to the bottom of the twisted bag then wrap it around and hot glue the other edge of the white paper frill.

3. Large Bag – Repeat the process you did for the drumsticks to mould the large bag into a rounded shape. Fill the bag with popcorn. Fold the sides of the bag in and tuck the bottom edge under then hot glue the edge shut. Hot glue the legs onto the sides of the turkey.

A paper bag turkey centerpiece will make the kids forget they have been cast off to another room.

Filled with popcorn, it’s one centerpiece that will have the kids carving that poor Tom to shreds.

This is one turkey Chevy Chase would be proud to carve.

Wouldn’t you rather sit here than at the boring adult table?

  1. When I was a junior in college, I went to my boyfriend’s house for Thanksgiving. We had to sit at the kids table with six and seven year-olds. Needless to say, the relationship didn’t last.
I mean really? Who forces adult children to sit at the kids table?
It was probably some kind of “test” and I obviously failed. But still.

  2. Good Morning,
I found your blog through Jennifer Rizzo’s blog I follow. Love your blog. I have you on my blog roll so I can follow the cute things you have on your blog.

  3. Too funny – but cute! I tell myself each night – after a long, exhausting day – that I wish I could “sit at the kids table.” It is my life metaphor I think 🙂 Hope your week gets off to a great start!

  4. I love the turkey!! In our family (my mom’s side) you don’t get to sit at the adult table until your parent leaves you the seat….obviously by passing away. I turned 50 this year and I am still sitting at the kids table! We have the kid’s kids table and this year – we will have the kid’s kid’s kids table!! 🙂

  5. I am so copying this when I host our extended family Christmas dinner. This is beyond adorable. I’m thinking some adults may want to sit at the kids table.

Thank you for linking up to our party, too.

I hope you and the family are doing well and that things will soon be back to normal. 🙂 Been thinking about you a lot.

    Amy

  6. This is so great, Kelly! I have one of those dreaded kids tables at my house every Thanksgiving and they all roll their eyes and moan with displeasure when forced to sit there. Thank you for linking up to the Better Late Than Never Thanksgiving Bloghop!
